Nicknames are one thing. First names are definitely different. And yes, I’m serious. The way grown men and women in Malta discuss individuals they do not know, prime ministers, politicians, cabinet ministers calling them by their given name is ridiculous. Literally, only in Malta – the village mentality fejn kullhadd jaf lil kullhadd. Except that you don’t. Calling the finance minister ‘Edward’ – really? He’s the finance minister, and after that, he’s ‘Scicluna’, but most definitely not Edward.

Had the Nationalist Party won the general election in 2013 there’s no doubt it would lose the next one – too many changes needed to be done, so thank God for that. We can continue with a cleaner slate.

Anyone over 30/40 knew what a Labour government was but the younger ones always thought we were exaggerating – now they know, and we’re only halfway through the legislature, and they haven’t even started yet.

There will always be Paul Bonellos on both sides of the fence. However for someone who so vociferously promoted Labour, chapeau to Paul Bonello for having the guts to speak out loud enough. How many of the billboarders have the balls to do that.

Even if Paul Bonello is doing it for personal gain (like Edward Scicluna is now tentatively changing tune in case he needs to be grilled in Brussels) I still believe it’s a strong statement to make.

Please stop calling people by their first names. It is the most incredibly ignorant and irritating Maltese habit. If you must use one name, then it’s the surname, not the given name. They are not your kittens.

Strictly speaking he should have been prime minister for a day. Today he takes the oath of office and the next day procedures are started to open offshore companies by his close collaborators.

If the election was a marriage, the country could obtain an annulment because everything was planned beforehand.
