I wonder why nobody ever thought of this before Evarist Bartolo did
It was one of those whack-your-head-against-the-nearest-hard-surface moments when Evarist Bartolo, Minister of Education and Employment, told the Labour Party’s annual general meeting that there should be a public registry of all those, not just PEPs, who “deposit money in tax havens”. This list should be public and online, he said, “because we are a party which believes in fiscal morality”.
It’s down the rabbit-hole again: is Bartolo just pretending to be dumb and naïve or is he really that catastrophically uninformed? How do you get the information to post online if it’s secret? And how do you oblige people to register if it’s secret (cue present crisis)? And what would be the point of hiding your stuff in a tax haven if you’re going to register it with the Maltese government who will then stick it online?
