The tourism promotion argument is a red herring. Azerbaijan hosted the Eurovision song contest. I don’t imagine you’re inclined to visit Baku.

The most famous Maltese visitors to Baku weren’t there for tourism, though they share that country’s government’s values, including the mistaken belief that a camp song contest can mask government corruption.

As far as I can remember there were many unprofessional songs in the past that had many votes since their ‘neighbours’ preferred to vote for them just because of their geographical location. I don’t see anything wrong with our own people voting for their country if there is the possibility to do so. After all you have to admit this has been Malta’s best song so far….

Anton Attard, despite being Beppe Fenech Adami’s wife’s brother, is 100% Taghna Lkoll. He likes the money and he likes the excitement, and above all, he likes the money he gets from the Malta Tourism Authority to organise ‘free seats for the public’ every time Joseph Calleja (another Taghna Lkoll) decides to sing here in the summer). And above all, Attard is one of those men who like the stardust of the very camp Eurovision Song Contest and think that it’s show business.

In fact, he’s best friend in that set-up is Mark Vassallo, the lawyer who is a long-time partner in Chris Cardona’s law practice, and who flew to Stockholm – God knows why – on the public dime with Anton Attard. He’s right there in the pictures. He is also the ‘legal counsel’ to PBS.

The Eurovision Song Contest is treated as a camp joke and an evening of gin, popcorn and jokes in front of the television (if you have nothing better to do) in developed countries and is taken seriously only in the former Soviet bloc, with exceptions there too, and Malta.

No sane adult sees winning or voting in the Eurovision Song Contest as the act of a patriot. Sane adults, right now, are concerned with the direction this mad country is taking. And yes, they are mutually exclusive. People who are dying of cancer do not worry about the state of their cupboards.
