You are referring to a stock split, which is not uncommon in public companies following a dramatic increase in share price. In the case of private companies, a stock split is usually a precursor to the introduction of additional shareholders.

In reply to Chris. No, you don't need two shareholders, not even under Maltese law. When a company increases the number of shares, it generally means a concomitant increase in share capital. And this in turn generally means either of two things or both: that the company is set to increase its activity and/or that new shareholders have been brought in.

Can someone please explain the significance of the change from 1 share to 50,000 shares (assuming that the value remained the same). And, pardon, my ignorance, isn’t the basis of a company that there should be at least 2 shareholders?
