The last few months have been riddled with scandals which have made Malta look more like a South American hub for criminal cartels than a modern EU member state.

One wonders where all these untold millions being stashed away in havens like the British Virgin islands, Panama and Switzerland originate from. For a nation this size, these multi-digit figures are obviously drawing a lot of attention on the International media and for the wrong reasons.

Until 40 years ago, Malta was living on rations and flour subsidies. Have we really achieved so much in such a short time?

There is a huge difference in the reactions of the Labour Party and its allies on one hand and the Nationalist Party and independent entities on the other.

The latter tend to issue statements to clarify matters and provide documents to support their explanations; e.g. the Times of Malta in the case of Hillman, Mario Demarco and Redmap Construction, Richard Cachia Caruana with reference to EMD.

The Labour Party often ignores completely the so-called allegations or throws mud at their opponents or tells them to shut their mouth.

Is this a sign that the Labour Party knows it is wrong and has no leg to stand on and realises that if it takes legal steps it may open a Pandora’s box?
