I would be absolutely unbothered if the press were to refer to Meinrad Calleja ad a cocaine trafficker from Sliema. In fact, he has to be described that way because it was a crucial part of his operations – his home town and social background, that is.

As I said, before migration between towns and villages, each one had its unique identity. I can even distinguish between people from Valletta and people from Bormla.

I honestly can’t understand why people are so touchy about their town or village. Do you imagine for one moment that I feel somehow responsible for Manuel Cuschieri? Or for Michael Falzon? Or Raphael Vassallo? Or Meinrad Calleja? The touchiness is because you know it’s true.

Rubbish. We all know that different towns and villages had until the very recent past – different atmospheres and a predominance of one kind of social group or another. It’s pointless pretending otherwise. In fact, when people from all over Malta moved into Sliema in the last 20 years, it changed completely – precisely because the social mix changed. The social problems in Bormla are not a figment of my imagination. They are documented.
