Not all doctors at health centres start at 8.00. There are doctors (on reduced hours or part-time contracts) who start at 8.15, 8.30, 8.45 and 9.00. The level of verbal abuse I get when I walk past the waiting-room at 8.30 (for my 8.45 shift) is sometimes terrible. I am actually considering walking through with a placard stuck to my chest stating ‘I start work at 8.45! Please do not insult me :)’

These ministers should be named and shamed because such interference is irresponsible and they should be held accountable for it. It is only the doctor or health professional who can assess and prioritise one case over another if necessary. For every favour received by one there are others who lose a right.

It is not only doctors who are under this sort of pressure. Ask those who operate ultrasound machines, take blood investigations, do echos, ECGs, x-rays, MRIs, allocate single rooms, etc. etc.

There were pushy people before March 2013, but it has now come to the stage where unnecessary tests are ‘ordered’ by people who simply need to appear to be ‘helping’.
