No, I mean they really don’t ask. They just accept it. “He has money.” “They made a lot of money in X.” I am always so surprised that they show absolutely NO curiosity about it. It’s always the first thing I want to know, and find subtle ways of asking in the course of conversation, so as to gauge whether they are crooks or not. Usually, if there is lots of evidence of money but a caginess about they actually do or did, they are crooks.

No, John, I wouldn’t be surprised. Practically all my adult life I have asked myself why people ‘with money’ would want to come and live in Malta, and most of the time, the only possible answer to this is that they’re running away from something, whether legal or not. People in Malta are very childish and unquestioning, and there’s a lot of magical thinking about money growing on trees, so they never ask where money is from or sense shadiness in a person. But Malta is really a pirates’ cove, seething with some very shady types.
