I'm sorry, but this is the usual failure of imagination. Most Maltese people lived from hand to mouth in the 1950s and 1960s. Installing a bathroom was financially impossible, and when you are living in cramped conditions, there isn't the physical space for one. At most they might have been able to install a lavatory in the yard and a plumbed basin somewhere close to the already existing plumbing. Why do you think so many lavatories were plumbed into balconies?

Thank you for pointing this out. A couple of summers ago, I criticised an army colonel for mocking asylum seekers by saying that they are unfamiliar with bathrooms and come from places where there are no lavatories. I pointed out to him that in the Malta of my childhood, few homes had bathrooms and many people lived in tenement conditions with a shared lavatory. But most of the time, they just used a bucket.

A couple of people jumped down my throat and went berserk, saying it wasn't true. My response was that they must have lived a very sheltered life, probably locked up in boarding-school.

Farrugia says he has no time for who is corrupt. But he has time to engage in morally corrupt practices by employing his girlfriend, who was a clerk, as director in a government agency. That too is corruption in that he uses his position for personal gain.
