The Turkish driver, on being told that his passenger is Maltese, immediately responded with, “Malta korrupt.” His last fare before that, coincidentally, had been a carload of Libyans with Maltese passports.

And his girlfriend was at a meeting in the same city, at which a former German minister of state was present, in which she mentioned that her boyfriend is Maltese. “Malta is such a corrupt island,” the ex minister said, probably thinking it all right to say that because she is not Maltese herself.
