I've been living away from Malta for about 10 years but tend to follow what's going on there with interest. I have never been into the partisan fever that seems to engulf the island every now and again for various reasons, but here's my tuppence worth on how I see this Panama Papers issue in an analogy.

There's a swimming pool which everyone goes to (by default). The rules say you shouldn't urinate in the pool. It's not a law but a stern warning put in place for hygienic purposes and out of respect for others.

The owners/managers of the pool also swim there, however the Panama Papers have revealed that some of these managers and a considerable number of people closely connected to the managers regularly and frequently urinate in the pool.

They haven't actually broken the law so the CEO and their fellow managers issue statements saying that, ignoring the fact these managers are enforcing the no-urinating-in-the-pool policy while the rest of us are swimming in their wee.

Then there are those who, standing in the urine-contaminated water up to their chin, applaud the managers at every turn for their efforts to keep the pool bar well stocked.

Changing management is one solution to the problem, although there's no guarantee the new management won't do/haven't done the same. The second option would be for the current management to come clean, admit their mistakes and most importantly STOP urinating in the pool.

This is the most favorable solution for the pool's reputation, economic stability and prosperity which all pool patrons should strive to achieve in the short term. However this requires unity of all the patrons and good will from the managers, which I can't see happening in the short term.

The third and final option is to change pool. I opted for that. Good luck to you all. You have the power to change things if you look beyond partisan politics and want to swim in cleaner waters.
