Not really – Angela Merkel travels around Italy on holiday. David Cameron stays in a run of the mill agriturismo in Toscana – my colleague’s daugher worked there one summer and actually got very friendly with them.

Schroeder was once sitting next to us in a bar in Senigallia – we only realised who he was because the Mayor came to greet him (all very informal).

The problem is not where but how. What’s with those awful shoes and the track suit pants – where is his “image consultant”?

You’re wrong. The farmers round here scrub up well and I have yet to meet one in this neck of the woods who is as dumpy and ill-presented as the Prime Minister. Don’t forget I live where he does.
