I was taken there. The worst thing about the Café Premier incident is that at least they tried. But obviously not, it was just a set up to lose money.

Why do you even bother going?

Ever tried lunch in Piazza Regina? A mish mash of plastic tables and chairs, most of them cooked to a brittle accident waiting to happen, the floor covered in used paper napkins and food scraps.

You’re left to consult a grubby menu covered in plastic film with pictures out of a nutritionist’s slideshow of nightmares and made to wait for a waiter who’s obviously under a contract not to smile.

And if you dare look up from your plate of fries with everything, it’s umbrellas caked in pooh and planters with an excuse of some evergreen. Doesn’t get any better inside either, everything covered in a thin film of black grime.

Cleaner costs have had to be absorbed differently. Cleaners have been done away with in many restaurants – waiters taking on this function as part of their duties. Laundry bills are also rendered nil by waiters – who in France provide and wash their own uniform – also ensuring the cleanliness of their aprons etc. (Safety shoes are not a luxury entertained by these waiters, nor by chefs. In Malta it is the employer that supplies these as part of the uniform.)

This past week has seen a decision by bistro / restaurant owners to cancel collective private security arrangements (tables/chairs in squares etc.) at perhaps a cost of 1500euro / month per square or collective area anyway manned by municipal surveillance cameras.
