The richest people in Malta are not the ones you would know to be the richest because they are also the stingiest (or thriftiest, to be kind).

Because I know them, if you were to tell me that they had spent a considerable sum on a holiday at X or Y hotel in Z country, my instant reaction would be “Somebody else paid for it.”

Some people are just not inclined to spend money, even if they have a great deal of it. They seem pathologically incapable of parting with money and don’t quite understand that part of the purpose of money is to buy pleasure as well as investments.

Muscat is one of those people. No, he will not have paid 10,000 euros for a week in a Dubai hotel. Forget it.
