He didn’t. He said that they helped out with introductions. I find that in Malta much is ‘lost in translation’, largely as a result of English-language newspapers reporting what people said in Maltese, or trying to paraphrase it and using the wrong words, or because of poor and inaccurate use of language generally. It should be obvious that the Nationalist Party did not support his nomination. He’s inept. Why would they support it? Besides which, support would come in the form of an official statement by the party itself.

Making introductions is not support. It’s basic civility. When you say that somebody ‘supported’ his nomination, it means that they want him to get the job. To suggest that Casa or any other Nationalist MEP wanted Toni Abela to get a position at the European Court of Auditors is ridiculous. Of course they didn’t – not for political reasons but because he is clearly unfit for purpose.

In reply to La Redoute. It seems to me that in the Med, there is an degree of admiration for people who get away with it. 'Il-h*xx*j' is tolerated, if not revered, around these parts. Northern Europe is a different scenario, not that it makes it justifiable, of course.

They just don’t get it, do they? I am almost 100% positive that nearly all of them care about the Labour Party more than they do their country – but can’t they see that Konrad Mizzi doesn’t give a rat’s arse about the Labour Party?
