What an absolutely stupid thing to say. Fearne may be a decent sort of chap ( as some say) but when he opens his mouth he proves he is not all that much smarter than Luciano Busuttil or Silvio Parnis.

Malta's national health service is based on Britain's "free at the point of delivery" system. You walk in, get treated according to what you need and walk out without paying a cent.

The American system, which these "Harvard consultants" will no doubt be familiar with, is very different. You may or may not be accepted, based on your insurance policy and your ability to pay. And that also means that patients can demand drugs or therapies that are unnecessary/excessive/wasteful, because they are paying customers.

Opening a medical school in a hospital set up as a private enterprise is unrealistic. Medical tourism simply means that those who have the means will be able to pay for a fancy hotel where they can also get their nose/boob job - at a price.

These are not the sort of patients who would allow themselves to be used for teaching practice and examined by medical students. I suspect students will be somehow not allowed or, at best, discouraged from approaching "private" patients.

We need to be asking Mr Fearne how the hospital plans to operate. Will paying patients be given preferential treatment? Will the same staff see both "paying patients" and Gozitans relying on the state health system?

How is he going to ensure staff are not biased towards their "VIP" patients?
How will he ensure that the health budget will not subsidize this private enterprise?

Before starting to think about Harvard, we had better check who the ultimate beneficial owner of Bluestone Special Situation Ltd is.

Vitalis Global Healthcare Ltd was registered as a company in Malta last May. It is fully owned by Bluestone Investments Malta Ltd, which is owned by Bluestone Special Situation Ltd, registered in the British Virgin Islands.

Konrad Mizzi will know, but if we ask him, he won't tell us.
