You are overlooking a crucial point: that John Dalli, at that point, was central to Joseph Muscat’s operations. Muscat, not Prime Minister Gonzi, was the first person Dalli rang when Barroso gave him 30 minutes to clear his desk.

His ‘invisibility’ is due to nothing other than his method of operating below the radar.

I have already explained it: that gives Dalli a hold over the others. A relationship is risky ONLY when the others can rat on you but you can’t rat on them. If Cini/Tonna rat on him (which they can’t anyway, unless forced onto a witness stand in a criminal trial) then he will blow the whole lot of them out of the water – Muscat, Mizzi and Schembri. It’s as simple as that: that’s what it looks like to me, anyway. Oh, and their silence right now is deafening. All that panic and chaos about two HSBC documents, and about this and Gibraltar/Cyprus – nothing.

You don’t automatically do that work by virtue of being an accountant (and not having worked as one for yonks). Not all lawyers are criminal defence lawyers, for example, or know criminal law.

You have it right there in the post that he went to the Bahamas hunting around in desperation to set up a trust for his Dubai money. Brian Tonna wouldn’t have needed to do that. In fact, he didn’t. He had Mossack Fonseca on tap. But to go through Mossack Fonseca before the Malta relationship was controlled by Tonna (as from February 2013), Dalli would have revealed his hand.
