The main reason that people like me vote for the Nationalist Party (and we're the ones who bring it to power, as the last general election showed) is that it is no longer a 'nationalist' party.

The Nationalist Party under Fenech Adami changed completely and drew to it a massive chunk of what used to be the traditional Strickland vote, for instance, which historically was anti-Nationalist rather than anti-Labour, and which, being more liberal and progressive, stood against the 'nationalist' values of the pre-Fenech Adami era.

An attempt to rebrand the Nationalist Party with right-wing values will spell the end of its chances. You only have to see what damage the 'No to Divorce' stance did to the Nationalist Party in 2011. That was the real turning-point in the road to the end that led to Muscat winning a 36,000 majority.

People like me (but not me) switched in droves to the Labour Party precisely because they thought it was more liberal and progressive than the Nationalist Party. They could not see all the red flags pointing to totalitarianism, oppression and far-right values.

No Joe Micallef Stafrace or Guzi Abela in sight. Bartolo is already back tracking. Scicluna, Grech and the rest of the cabinet have no problem being associated with corruption of the first order. Muscat, Schembri and Mizzi have taken over the party with hardly a whimper from the veterans.
