Hdura tal-French Revolution. I strongly recommend that you read François-René de Chateaubriand’s Memoirs from Beyond the Tomb/Grave. He wrotes his memoirs at the end of his life on condition that they be published only after his death. There’s an excellent English translation that maintains the authentic voice. Having read about the French Revolution only in turgid historical terms, I was fascinated to read this eyewitness account of what people were really like in the streets, what the sentiments were, what they said and how they behaved. It was like reading about a Mintoffian rabble in the 1970s. Truly, there is nothing new or unique in human nature. One of the most evocative accounts – and he writes about it in passing – is of how, hearing a commotion in the street outside his lodgings, he leant out of the window to see what was going on, only to be confronted with a scene of a small mob brandishing on long poles the heads of ‘enemies of the people’ who had just been guillotined by The People. When they saw him looking, they rounded on him and began shouting abuse, shoving the heads up at his window on their poles. Two centuries later, and in Malta they’re still the same. You only have to look at them on Facebook.

Good point – it makes a lot of sense. But on reflection, I also think that a large part of it is that his ‘authority’ in Malta stems from this aura he created around himself of the glamorous and powerful Joseph with his body-guards and his dictator/potentate friends. And then we see this bald head on a dumpy man in the Burger King queue, unrecognised by anybody (except the photographer) and completely unable to pull the usual stunt of queue-barging with that old, moustachioed ex-policeman protection officer who’s glued to his hip in Malta.
