You speak as though that is something exceptional, and as though he had a choice. Don’t judge the rest of the democratic world by Malta’s twisted yardstick.

Cameron had no choice but to respect the result. That is what the referendum is for. And he did have a choice as to whether to resign or not, and he will have got flak whichever he chose. In fact, he is getting flak for resigning. People are calling him a coward for not facing up to his own mess and dealing with it.

I wonder if he’ll manage. This referendum has showed that a sizeable number of Tories did vote remain given the number of Labour voters who voted leave. I wonder if there isn’t a risk that he will become toxic to the Tories. There is also the isse that he is almost universally seen as an ambitious go-getter, which certainly does not breed trust.
