I have read all your posts on Brexit. I do not agreed that the reason behind this tragic choice is exclusively ignorance and mass hysteria. The loser is always to blame for a failed campaign.

First of all, there should never have been a referendum - especially called by Cameron who was in favour of staying. How dumb is that?
In a democracy decisions on complex matters should be left in the hands of elected representatives who supposedly understand their intricacies.

Matters that concern morals (divorce, abortion, euthanasia) are rightly put to popular vote to gauge the moral pulse of the nation which falls outside the political remit. So, Cameron's first blunder was calling the referendum.

Secondly, the Remain campaign was nonexistent. An Oxford professor commented that the Remain campaign was "the EU is shit but leaving is shittier". That never works.

It failed in the UK as it failed in the Nationalist Party campaign in the last Maltese general elections. It may be true, and yes we often regret our decisions, but unfortunately that is the way the human brain works.

"I'm not so happy with the situation, it has become stale, there is an attractive alternative (normally totally irrational and highly emotional), nobody is providing me with valid rational reasons to hang on (its shittier on the other side is neither rational nor convincing) so I'll go for it".

This was the typical mindset of the Maltese switcher who voted Labour in Malta, the British leave voter, the 45 year old andropausal male who walks out on his wife for another woman. It's human nature: emotion wins over rationality, especially in weaker psyches - be it for lack of education, greed, envy, fear of aging etc.

The only way to stop and possibly reverse the process is through strong and convincing opposing arguments usually coming from the outside and sometimes (in rare cases) from one's own conscience.

The "blame" for Brexit lies with those who failed to remind the voters that for Britain the EU has meant peace, the EU has meant freedom of movement, the EU has meant assistance in emergencies (mad cow disease) the EU has meant belonging to a group of great nations.

The rational brain needed to be stimulated to neutralise the general negative feeling which EU member state governments have generated by repeatedly using the EU (and Angela Merkel) as a scapegoat each time they neeeded to introduce unpopular measures in their country to hide their and their predessors' maladministration (as in Italy, Greece and Spain).

Unfortunately, even this time the hard truth hit the morning after when emotion subsided and the rational part of the brain took over. Oh God, what have I done?

That's the way it goes.

"who bent over backwards to look like fools"

They shouldn't have. That is exactly how politicians are undermined. Make a politician look like a fool, pretending that it's for a good cause, and every opinion he or she gives thereafter will be framed, consciously or unconsciously, in that context.

People should keep their dignity at all times. It's one thing being forced to lose your dignity through the actions of others. It's quite another diving right into it yourself.

If a politician wants to do something for charity, he or she can write out a large cheque.

I agree with La Chouette. It was totally inappropriate. Brexit is not an 'item of foreign news', which is how it is being handled in Malta's media (which is probably why this website is seeing lots of traffic on this issue). It is the beginning of many major problems for the European Union and for Malta.

But that show wasn't only completely inappropriate because of the unfolding events. It was just inappropriate, full stop. Maltese people are already incredibly banal and idiotic, and anything which encourages that further should be avoided.

If you think there are no grave dangers in the escalating banality of society, look to Britain.
