A lot of people seem to be unaware of the chasm between the ruling elites and the ordinary citizen - that is the real story here. Establishment politicians have forgotten about the ordinary, ugly, citizen and his needs. Jeremy Paxman has written a good piece on it.

In that case, I apologise. I disagree with the 'let's just crack on' approach, though. This issue is so important that it has got to be discussed to death. In fact, this is exactly the sort of discussion that we should have had BEFORE the vote - but in the mass hysteria in which "elites" were condemned and "experts" dissed by the members of our now post-factual society, that wasn't possible. They're all having to listen to the experts now, though.

The 'time to move on' comment was not intended to advocate for curtailment of discussion. It was more a suggestion as to what the rest of the EU should do now.

Beyond that, being called fascist twice for having simply posted this comment shows that having a proper debate is tricky. Whether on Xarabank or is-Salott or here. The main point in my comment was clearly not in that 'time to move on' yet you totally ignored it.

Somebody with your level of education should immediately understand the difference between ACKNOWLEDGING (the use of 'respect' is linguistically incorrect, unfortunately) the result and disagreeing with it sufficiently as to wish to spend time discussing it.
In reply to <a href="https://daphnecaruanagalizia.com/2016/06/extraordinary-popular-delusions-madness-crowds/#comment-3093197">Gidmejmun</a>.

Agreed, it feels this referendum was more about the north east and midlands vs the city. One could say the real loser was Labour losing all its strongholds.

All the signs are there, Brexit gathered its vote amongst the less educated, on a lower income and with little access to any benefits the EU might have provided. Not to mention the automatic globalist style certain EU strategies are imbued with and how this destroys any good done locally.

Interviews show a disenfranchised population with not much to lose. Throwing money at farmers and fishermen to sit idle is also what triggered it.

The problem here is cultural and profound, unlike the French, Brits won't be rendered a cost, redundant or worse, subsidy takers. In 2016, the common man insists on a role, a real one, not some collateral afterthought to maintain a theoretic social equilibrium. One only has to go back to English social literature to confirm how different the Anglo-American model is to the continental thesis.

Then there's the whole TTIP affair and the steel debacle. And that, I'm afraid is a direct responsibility of the EU's inherent and most painful contradictions endorsed by Merkel's Germany.

The issue here is how work has been replaced by financial algorithms. It is no coincidence that Farage started off as a trader.

Oh, right - the people's revolt against the elite: led by Boris 'Old Etonian" Johnson and Nigel 'Plummy Voice' Farage and Michael 'Received Pronunciation' Gove.

Spare me. How sad that you believe that. It was the revolt OF the elite against their peers, a jostle for superiority, and as always happens when the elite jostle each other for greater power or position, they drag in the working class for support.

Without a knowledge of history, you will never understand contemporary society or human behaviour.

They just took back removing free movement of labour. Basically they only just realised there's over a million British passport holders working around the EU. That's promise no. 2 done away with.
