This piece was not meant to be very critical of Britain. It is a great country which has given and continues to give huge contributions to civilisation, culture, medicine, technology etc.

But it tries to point out that a national mythology based on otherness and moral superiority is bound to lead to votes which reject being part of something bigger.

Undeniably a good article. You need to remember that the UK parliament is the mother of all parliaments and democracy rules regardless of some poor calls and outcomes. The EU unfortunately has no time for democracy, it is to be suppressed at all costs for the greater good of what exactly? No one is accountable, decision making is non existent, corruption makes the mafia look like kindergarten and above all no-one in the commission is elected. "Crooks in suits" is a very apt description for this motely bunch. And contrary to the comments below I am neither uneducated or gullible and I'm a Brit. There is a lot of screaming, hair pulling, tears, and accusations currently, but it was a democratic vote in the UK and the majority voted out, too late to come up with all the rhetoric etc wanting it changed. It had to be done, the UK will survive and prosper ok outside of the EU, as it has done countless times before. People don't seem to understand how Brits tick, or how they will react when pushed into a corner as in this case. Well now you know.

Note: There is no careless language or thought in this article.

This is an interesting, well-argued piece with many valid, historical references but a tad biased against the British.

Various nations also believe they are superior to everybody else and with less reason: the Germans and the French, for example.

Italians think they are the most creative and artistic people on earth, a nation of saints, poets and navigators.

Even in Malta we find many who think the Maltese are superior to others, generous, cunning (perceived as a good quality), brave and industrious.

And of course, we have a special place in Our Lady's heart. No wonder the Europeans are jealous of us and want to take us over.

I think the single most important issue in the referendum was simply immigration. Many Britons, like many Maltese, are certain that immigrants are stealing jobs, lowering the average salaries and consuming precious resources.

Many who voted to leave thought that, overnight, all foreigners would disappear and Britain would return to what it was before the War.

Others, themselves descendants of the 'traditional' Asian, Caribbean and African immigrants feel threatened by the latest waves of East European immigrants.
