In reply to anthony. Heseltine is wrong. This mess is not the same as a small boy sent to face his teacher or headmaster with his carelessly done homework. The direct consequences on millions of peoples lives are too great not to send the best possible team to negotiate, and try to clean up as much of the mess as possible.

In reply to Gidmejmun. The wording of Article 50 does not allow anyone else, other than the withdrawing member state, to trigger off the exit procedure. The EU Commission and the member states can, however, apply political pressure on the UK especially if the delay is creating problems for them.

The Brexiteers have no plan. It should have been No 10 who should have had the post Brexit plan a leading ‘vote leave’ conservative told him.

They are worse than Muscat. At least he had a plan to pillage Malta.

I think Heseltine is right. Boris Johnson as PM, Gove as minister for European Affairs and Farage as chief negotiator should be thrown to the lions in Brussels.

They should be given two years to get the country out of this morass. Then they should either be awarded the Garter or locked up in the Tower.

If I may once again, it’s not said that Schultz — or the EU, to be more precise — cannot themselves invoke Article 50 if the Brits get the jitters, as they seem to be doing, and start contemplating their navel instead of living up to the commitment they made with so much verbal cockiness in the past few weeks.
