You ask why not. The answer is that it is no more culturally acceptable for men to dye their hair or wear wigs than it is for them to wear foundation make-up. Therefore when men are so anxious about their perfectly acceptable grey hair or their perfectly acceptable baldness as to transgress against the convention, they broadcast the fact that they are more embarrassed by what is acceptable (grey hair, baldness) than they are by what is unacceptable (hair dye, wigs) and that leads people – correctly, in my view – to question their judgement and personality.

However natural dyed hair looks, beyond a certain age you always know it’s dyed. You always know it’s dyed anyway, because dyed hair does not reflect light in the same way as natural hair, and the colour is uniform, unlike natural hair, which seems to be one colour but – unless it is pure black – is actually a mass of different shades.
