It s actually quite normal. Whenever I apply for a job somewhere, I still present my primary school report from Stage 1 (that indicates my age) because I had been given 4 gold stars and a silver star. And the silver was only because of my handwriting otherwise I would have got a gold one.

Psychologically unbalanced people are able to cram information and remember it for the exams – being first in the exams does not mean the child is intelligent, but just that the child is able to remember facts that they have studied.

Intelligence, on the other hand, is the ability to use what you learn and extrapolate from it. The problem with the Maltese education system is that the focus is on remembering facts, and not learning how to apply the theory in practice.

Franco Debono may have been first in his class, but that does not exclude him being psychologically unbalanced. Being one does not exclude the other. Unfortunately cramming things for an exam is not what it takes to succeed in life – contrary to what many believe.
