I have to disagree. Change in how one (and, subsequently, a society) perceives and deals with relationships, sex and the lot, amongst others has been around (and is also important for society’s continuous development) forever.

Your last sentence is absolutely wrong. Mintoff fought the Church because of the authority it held over the public, spiritual and temporal, in the same way that he fought the Colonial power, since both were a serious challenge to his ambition to have such an authority himself, a completely temporal one, over the people of the island.

As for the rest of your arguments one could go along with them as long as one does not reach the conclusion that in places where the Catholic Church does not predominate, or has lost its former influence, the behaviour of the population is much better as a result, and less hypocritical.

It all boils down to ethics, or the lack.of them.

Daphne, you have hit the nail squarely on the head in this article.

If this is what the Labour Party wants as their deputy leader, then so be it. But one must ask why the public voted for them in the first place.

Perhaps I’m not so far off the mark when I assert that the electorate gets the government it deserves.
