As was Leopold's. I'm sticking up for Godfrey's independent thinking derived from a moral education based on our Judeo-Christian heritage with all its blemishes and warts versus Leopold's nihilistic humanist argument that independent thinking can appear spontaneously in a vacuum, with the usual compulsory dig at Church and God, which really hadn't much to do with it, and as though a single Neanderthal could leap to e=mc2 without 1000s of years of education. You want freethinkers. Free thinkers read and absorb and use everything. They do not deny any part of knowledge just because it does not subscribe to their vision of things.

I think that the UK has had more than enough time, and generations, to teach young people to think independently and not follow the crowd of madness. Had this happened in Malta there would be many who would be blaming our Mediterranean, post-colonial, Catholic, insular ....etc....mentality.

Let us face it. We are all human, with the same merits and faults, that can predominate at any time under the right (perhaps I should say, wrong) conditions.

You have a point regarding huge voter apathy among the 20-something generation. I am 27 and have always had a huge interest in politics, not least because of the ramifications that it has on our daily lives.

Incredibly, among my circle of friends, the Brexit issue was the first political issue that we sat down and discussed in detail among us. Granted, some opinions were shallow, but at least they were discussing things. Feeling shocked. Betrayed. Insulted and disgusted.

However, other than that, the 'I don't care, laissez-faire' attitude reigns supreme. Even during the whole Panama Papers scandal, maybe one or two individuals I know would take an interest and express their opinions on the matter, while others would brush the matter off as if it wasn't important.

My generation needs to 'wake up and smell the coffee'. To realise that their vote is important and valued, and to realise that lack of interest in local and/or international matters effectively means being less informed about things and potentially making a rash decision which one could live to regret.
