Having wholeheartedly supported Margaret Thatcher's and Angela Merkel's brand of politics, I have always said that there need to be more women in politics.

That said, in Brazil and Argentina, it is men who are currently cleaning up the messes left by Dilma Roussef and Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner respectively. In Bangladesh, the prime minister and the leader of the opposition are both women and the country is always in a state of unrest as the begums fight each other.

Britain came close to electing the downright awful Andrea Leadsom as prime minister and Theresa May has started her premiership by making some really terrible choices.

All romantic notions aside about how women (or men) would do this or that better, when it comes down to it, good leadership has very little to do with gender and more to do with a host of other factors.

That's true. Had he been elected Labour leader instead of his union-backed brother Ed, none of this mess would have happened. David Miliband would have been prime minister instead of David Cameron, and there would have been no referendum. Today it would have been business as usual and none of this mad panic.

I largely agree with this. However, having not been too impressed with Angela Eagle's bid for leadership, I'd like for David Miliband to come back and clean up Labour's mess.

Now there's a great leader that the UK never had.
