It’s part of the exchange. When we refer to people in positions of seniority by their first name, it is because – consciously or unconsciously – we think little of them. If you were Maltese, I would think it was just social ignorance: Maltese people don’t know to use a surname and use a first name instead. But you are not Maltese and speak of Thatcher, so when you say ‘Theresa’ it shows what you think of her. Unless she’s your sister or old college mate, that is.

No, it’s the observation of somebody skilled at picking up the subtext in verbal communication. When you refer to Thatcher by her surname, it’s because you subconsciously class her as male, while you call Mrs May, whom you have never met, ‘Theresa’, which means you see her as your (female) inferior.

You’re free to disagree. But Immigration was basically untouched during the thatcher years. There was a continuation of Ted Heath’s already-well-controlled position on immigration. You can make a correlation with a couple of things, but Theresa is nothing like Thatcher. Theresa isn’t an extremist free marketeer or an authoritarian milk-snatcher when it comes to social policy/welfare state.

I disagree. I have heard her speak about immigration. I’ve heard her speak about many issues, and on all occasions I thought she was trying to out-Thatcher Thatcher.

Leadsom is just trying to win at that game too, and she isn’t very good at it.

I disagree here. Leadsom was the major winner tonight. May obviously polled most votes, but Leadsom’s second position is very strong. Surprisingly strong and probably enough to get her into the final run-off in the party membership vote.

Purely as a matter of interest, why do you consistently write ‘off’ when you mean ‘of’? You are clearly British, so lack of exposure to the language is not the reason.
