What terrible problems of miscommunication occur when people think they know English but they don’t. FEAR FOR does not mean BE AFRAID OF.

Let’s say you receive news that one of your best friends has been diagnosed with cancer. You then FEAR FOR HIM because he is in danger.

I think you need to have your head examined. What is headlining in the Maltese press today? Three MALTESE men in their late 50s and late 40s who paid boys for sex and filmed them – then probably sold the footage online because it was foreign police who alerted the Maltese police about their activities. Are you happy to live among people like this? Obviously not – I’m not, either. But unless we choose to go off and live in a cave alone, we have to accept that some people are disgusting and others are criminal.

As for beheading and disembowelling people on the streets, I think you need to get out of the island a little bit more.

Erdogan’s promised retaliation is reminiscent of the aftermath of ‘Operation Valkyre’ ofJuly 1944 – with the addition of mob-lynching.

Although Western democracies pay lip-service to Erdogan’s being ‘democratically elected’ I would say that they look at him with suspicion. He seems to consider himself as the modern re-incarnation of Mustafa Kemal – less the chain-smoking and alcoholism which led to that man’s demise at the age of 57 – but with a lesser bent of secularism.

I hope there really was an attempted coup and it’s not just an invention by Erdogan to get rid of his critics and gain a stronger hold over the country. Let’s hope that those arrested are given a fair trial.

What we may have here is a utilitarian government under a democratic guise. I fear there are far too many such governments in Europe.
