My sons live in Berlin, and have done for a while, to varying degrees.

Yes, they were tourists. And yes, there are several museums and exhibitions. Ordinary Germans outside Berlin inhabit the narrow world of the Nazi, yes - but the point here is that the state is hyper-conscious of the dangers and all-out to control them, aware of the greater significance that German racism and nationalism have than they do anywhere else.

The same cannot be said for the rest of Europe.

I'm going to have to put you straight on that one. The capital, Berlin, is thick with museums and extremely detailed exhibitions that drive the consequences of Nazism home so thoroughly that I spent an entire day at the exhibition on the site of the Gestapo HQ and at certain points had to turn away from other people there to hide the fact that I was crying - until I noticed that many of them were wiping away tears too.

I didn't say immigration was the only factor. I said it was the single biggest issue. Anti-EU feeling has run high for years, thanks to tabloid bysteria feeding the pervasive sense of exceptionalism, but it was immigration that topped the lot.

One has to sit for an examination; if successful one can then apply for the passport. Of course this against 1000 pounds fee. But it is nothing compare to the advantages. I urge all Maltese working in Great Britain to apply.

I read the assumptions and extrapolations you make and despair.

Before you make the diagnosis of ''anti youth mentality in their blood'' you should visit parks, gardens and commons i.e. places appropriate for children. You might learn a thing or two.

I disagree. For the disaffected poor people in the north of England and Wales it was about immigration. Maybe for Farage too, but then his party only polled 12% of the votes at the general election. For people like Michael Gove and the other Conservative Brexiters (let's put Boris aside for this one), it was a question of national pride and principle - that the British parliament have the ultimate authority over the law of the land. I think you are confusing sovereignty with democracy. Of course there are many undemocratic aspects of the British system but the way they see it, it is their lack of democracy, which they prefer to the lack of EU democracy. Anti-EU feeling in the UK has ebbed and flowed over the years and predates the influx of new immigrants by several decades. Immigration may have swung this vote but it is certainly not the only factor.
