Erdogan is following the example of the classic dictators: Sulla and his proscriptions in 82 BC and Hitler’s Night of the Long Knives in 1934.

A purge eliminates all known critics of the dictator and instills fear in the rest of the population who oppose tyranny.

Erdogan acted so fast that the ‘proscription’ lists (or at least many of those lists) must have been drawn up some time before the attempted coup.

I would say the E.U. got itself into a hell of a situation with its abundant promises to Erdogan to keep Europe free of refugees escaping the Middle East crisis.

It is also being made very much aware of the ever-closer and warmer relations between Putiin and the Turkish dictator.

If Turkey, which is a large country but not a wealthy one, can host 3 million refugees, so can the 28 combined states of the European Union.

There shouldn’t be any cause for panic; they’re refugees after all, not Attila and his Huns.
