The Council mentions “the right of everyone to a fair trial”. What fair trial when Erdogan has removed all judges not to his liking?

They are young men with serious psychiatric problems and anti-social personalities who seek revenge on society by going out and murdering people in a spree. Religion and ethnicity have absolutely nothing to do with it. They are just the label society uses for its own convenience. But then it has no label for the American student who picked up a gun and mowed down his fellow students, or for the so-called Una Bomber.

Two generations ago, these problematic, anti-social young men joined European terrorist groups like the Red Brigades or the Bader Meinhof (or the IRA) and had fun blowing people up. Generations before that, they took off for the remotest colonies and became – literally – slave drivers or spent their time burning the natives.

Now, they have no outlet, so they do this. The problem is not Islamic. The problem is that young men with anti-social personalities compounded by psychiatric problems become dangerous if left untreated in a way that young women are not.

Let’s not overly venerate what the Council says in its statements. The EU has just paid the Turkish government around €6bn in order to stem migration from the region. That agreement and the amounts paid would have gone down the drain had the coup succeeded.

Money is most likely the motivation behind the EU’s support for Erdogan, who has an atrocious human rights records, which rights were sacrosanct to the EU until a few years ago.

They are not merely the expression of the sentiment of the meeting. To be adopted, conclusions require formal agreement by all EU member states, as well as prior negotiation in detail in the days leading to the Council meeting.

Sometimes negotiations can be quite delicate on some subjects, although I do not expect they were as complicated on this specific topic.
