I think that you are speaking about a country that would abide by the rule of law. I don’t see Turkey ever playing the fair game. What Turkey has been doing is bullying its way through.

The problems in Malta have nothing to do with the nature of the problems in Turkey. The Maltese government can’t shut down newspapers and fire people en masse on the basis of their political opinion.

It’s not his power that’s the problem, but what he does with it. One basic example: with European labour laws, you can’t fire people en masse and indiscriminately as the Turkish government has done.

With laws on press freedom, the government can’t shut down newspapers and television stations.

And more in that vein.

Well, in any case, with EU membership you have to change before you join and not after.

I really don’t think enough was done to harry Turkey into making the grade. It’s as though the various member states of the European Union thought Turkey would remain keen and did not envisage that it would instead turn into a nightmare state.

How can the law do anything about a prime minister who refuses to sack his minister and chief of staff for corruption?

The law, on the other hand, allows investigation by the police. But the Maltese system has no state prosecutor (unlike, say, France), which means that there is nobody to take the initiative and investigate/prosecute if the police refuse to do so.

This is, technically, a matter for the state prosecutor and not for the police – but Malta does not have one. THAT is the problem and it has nothing to do with the European Union.

In reply to NIN. Yes. I see you know very little about EU law. It is not 'the EU' which acts as a check on government excesses, but the laws which countries have to enact as a condition of membership. In other words, it's Maltese law enacted in line with EU requirements that checks our government's behaviour.
