It must be stated 1 million times if necessary, that as long as Northern Ireland remains Protestant and Loyalist in majority, there is no chance for independence, much less chance for a unification. It does not depend on the PM of Eire. In fact unification may bring again a civil war, with hugely Protestant counties wanting independence from the newly formed Eire. There are sectarian ties and tensions that no one from 3000 KM away seems to understand. They may have voted in majority to remain, but unlike the mindset here, the EU is not the be all end all for them.

And as time passes, not even the Scottish question is remaining that straight forward. Especially since they are discovering that economically they will be worse off, and they will end with a budget deficit that they will find difficult to solve. Oil prices are falling and North Sea oil may not be the saver. Besides, England and what remains of the UK will do to Scotland what the EU will do to UK. Scottish workers in the UK, and they are not small in numbers, may find themselves treated like other migrants at best. The UK will tell the Scots that you cannot have your cake and eat it. And lastly, since the Queen does not want it, it will not happen. Rest assured that all the establishment will be mobilized once again for Scotland to remain. Ms. Sturgeon may be surprised to find herself abandoned like the nobles abandoned William Wallace in the battle of whatever.

Scotland may have had secession, but if the referendum was done within a month of Brexit. The UK will remain as it is, wait and see. Time is in their favor.

Ho hum.

The Irish are the Irish, whether they were born in Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland. The Scots are a different nation. Here's some background reading: http://www.historyonthenet.com/Chronology/timelinenorthernireland.htm

Your last paragraph begs some thought. I agree 100% with you as a premise to what follows. However, that is only a consequence, in my view, of the treatment given to Germany upon its reunification.

Sections of a country can be separated by a sea (Mainland Italy, Sicily and Sardegna along with the other minor islands form the Republic of Italy which was united ages ago).

True that East and West Germany had a historical connection divided only by World War II. Maybe Scotland and Ireland have no such deep rooted historical links. But, in theory, a unification treaty by which Ireland absorbs Scotland within it would not constitute a new nation and would automatically form part of the EU. In practice, I do not see the Irish playing ball with the Scots.

Greenland, which is part of the state of Denmark, left the EU while Denmark remains a member. Perhaps Northern Ireland and Scotland should look into that option although in their case it would be much harder as it is the mother country who wants to leave.

That's not possible because a union between Scotland and Ireland would form an entirely new state which would then have to reapply for EU membership separately and in its own right.

The reunification of Ireland would not form a new state but would simply give a larger geographical area to an existing one. It would still be Ireland.

Perhaps Scotland could secede from Britain and unite with Ireland forming a United Republic instead of a United Kingdom. That way they would stay in the EU. Somehow I think that could work, though I cannot imagine yet what name one would need to come up with for it.
