Being based in Britain, I followed the Brexit campaign intently. I must say, that although these posters weren't published, the Bremainers were very much transmitting the very same messages illustrated by them.

They were prophets of doom and gloom. For them there was no hope outside the European Union. Also, according to them, Britain had to stay in a flawed union because there was no other choice.

Essentially, they were also saying that as Britain is much better than the rest of Europe put together, Britain had to stay in to make it better. Most people must have easily questioned why Britain should stay in the union and bother to make it work better if Britain itself was stronger and better.

The Remain campaign was doomed to fail and I wasn't even slightly surprised when it did.

Most people don't respond to messages of doom and gloom, no matter how true and rational they are. They just don't. People respond better to messages of hope and glory, most especially the British, many of which adhere to an over inflated image of Britain.

And this is exactly what the Brexiters churned out, lead by the ever so jovial Bojo the clown. They promised hope, glory and everything under the sky and the British people just couldn't have enough of it.

David Casa was on the radio every afternoon, too, taking calls from people who didn't want technical information but had more personal or idiosyncratic questions. That's how be came to be elected to the European Parliament in 2004. He had made his name answering EU-related questions on the radio.

I read somewhere that at a certain point in the campaign, the Remain camp specifically decided not to rebut factual inaccuracies by the Leave campaign, because it would take too much effort to do so.

This was a fundamental mistake.

In Malta, one of the major factors during the Accession referendum in 2003 was the role played by the Malta-EU Information Centre, which provided factual information about the various issues raised during the accession negotiations and the subsequent campaign.

It also reacted to the misinformation spread by the No campaign, thanks in no small way to a certain Joseph Muscat.

"Once out, the pin can't be put back" is very effective.

"Don't leave it, lead it" is also very good as it gives a positive message to lead in unity (within the EU) without being divisive (in leaving the EU).
