Given the apparent abuse of public office for private gain in the form of graft, and the rewards given to the favoured public service officials and their ineffective work ethics, this country appears to be in the grip of systemic political corruption.

Public scrutiny is also practically nonexistent as has been demonstrated by the government’s ongoing refusal to publish any contract documentation.

The stability of the economy has actually been threatened by the direct foreign investment in the Delimara project given the ‘unique’ debt guarantees given by this government.

In addition, given this government’s total lack of transparency, who knows how many other ‘off-budget’ liabilities may have been agreed to – not only in the energy and health service sectors, but the Non-American University of Malta; and the IIP negotiations/agreements/transactions.

That happens because the situation in Malta is quite unique. It is effectively a town, but with the borders of a state and the geographical borders of an isolated island. So people here go from birth to the death in the company of exactly the same people. It doesn’t happen anywhere else.
