At a Malta Environment and Planning Authority public meeting about the sanctioning of illegalities by a well known Burmarrad contractor, Victor Axiak left early.

If he can’t handle the pressure, I agree that he should resign. The memo should have been distributed to all board members, not just one.

Victor Axiaq is not anti-clerical: for years he headed the Church’s environment commission.

I am appalled by the behaviour of Timmy Gambin.

During the Mriehel hearing he had the audacity to attack Alex Vella Falzon (a 70+yr old), falsely accusing him of having a conflict of interest when all along it was he himself who had a conflict of interest since he is a consultant for the developer on that much maligned power station project.

In the second hearing which was held later on in the day for Gasan’s second project, Gambin went a step further and had the gall to accuse the eNGOs for being “morally despicable” for filing a judicial protest against the board members. This to people who are not acting for any personal gain but in the common interest.

Even if he had no conflict of interest, his intimidating manner would have made Uncle Patrick Holland proud. Timmy Gambin is not a man of small stature. Any lesser man/woman would have been shaken and cowered into silence being attacked in such a manner.

Finally, Timmy Gambin failed miserably in his role as a board member who is supposed to listen objectively to both sides and then take a decision. Instead he violently defended both projects as his own. One cannot but help but wonder what is there in it for him.

Incidentally, he has just set up an NGO for his own research projects and is seeking funding for this.
A coincidence?

In reply to Daphne Caruana Galizia. Quite right, or postpone till he is back on his feet. Now that we know where he stands, he is not trying to do the done thing and declare the voting null and void, but just piecing the chains of events.

What person with a “rational mind” chooses not to read out the letter given to him by the chairman when he was supposed to ?

Being a character of “rational mind” he should anticipated that it would not have ended by him simply not reading the letter. The cat has been let out of the bag and this guy clearly is not fit for purpose.

Does the ERA chairman have the power to remove board members on these grounds ?

Perhaps it was not an error of judgement. Perhaps his hands were tied. The timing, with Victor Axiaq being indisposed, comes across as part of the plan.

The University of Malta has its own fair share of corrupt practices. While there are several honest and upright academics, there is a significant number of other academics who fail to command the respect they should in the positions they hold.
