Make-believe is a ploy popular with Muscat’s bosom buddies as well and appearances are not there simply to impress the ‘foreigners’ but to bolster image and power on the home turf as well or perhaps even primarily.

Minister Herrera is not planting trees; as Daphne says he’s just talking about it. As if it’s some frightfully novel idea he’s just come up with.

The Department of Agriculture has a P.A.R.K. Directorate dedicated exclusively to afforestation. I personally know many of the employees there and most have decades of experience in tree planting. Did the ministry need to commission a two-year study by academics (who have never planted a tree in their whole life) to tell us what needs to be done?

I can tell the minister what needs to be done: give the P.A.R.K. Directorate sufficient workers and equipment, such as water bowsers, and let them get on with their job.

And if the minister would like to do something extra, he can re-introduce the Tree 4 U Campaign set up by the previous government and practically abandoned by the present one.
