I hate it when people use words like ‘purge’. It really shows a total lack of knowledge of the historic references. And current, in Turkey’s case.

I am not talking about how people in their 20s and 30s see their own parents, but how they see their friends’ parents. And I’m afraid to say that their views are astonishingly accurate.

I thought that they would be different from mine, but incredibly, they’re not. The reason for this, I suspect, is that I constantly remind myself how I and my friends looked at people a generation or two older than us, when we were 20, when they didn’t behave age-appropriately. We thought of them, especially the men, as losers and sleazes. And I can tell you that nothing has changed in that regard.

The man of 60 who hangs around with carefully arranged hair, gym-toned body, drink in hand, trying to pull girls at bars where his children’s friends and contemporaries hang out is regarded in exactly the same way I and my friends regarded X, Y and Z at Saddles in the early 1980s.

‘Kids’ are never flattering about their parents and their views, but if your children are in their 20s and 30s and still think you are ridiculous, wrong and completely out of order, then they are probably right.

In reply to Joe the Lion. No, you just behave age-appropriately. Joe Tanti does not behave age-appropriately. For reasons that will be obvious, I am regularly exposed to the views of people in their 20s and 30s about the behaviour of people their parents' age (50s, 60s) and I can tell you that those views are not at all flattering or admiring.

Don’t get any high hopes that anyone will wake up. Oh! the irony. The ‘cold’ Icelanders demanded their PM’s resignation ‘hot’ on the heels of the Panama Papers scandal break-out.

While the ‘hot-headed’ Maltese are still ‘stone-cold’ about it after more than five months when the scandal hitting the Maltese triumvirate is so much more serious than that of Iceland. In essence, this is a nation of corrupt and greedy species.

Today I believe we are even more so than any other nation.
