Going back to my first encounter with Priapus in Pompei 50 years ago I would like to point out something which I feel is rather apt.

On that occasion, the tour guide politely asked the female members of the group to pass through a side passage which bypassed the iconic fresco.

They were not allowed to view that huge phallus being weighed on scales against gold. He explained to us that it was not right to expose the weaker? sex to pictures of the male reproductive organ.

How things have changed in fifty years.

Much as I admire the good bishop’s sardonic humour, I fail to see the connection between these high rise and phallic symbols: “spoil the view* is anything but a climax really. Had they been church spires or a Taj Mahal as erections to love of God or mistress they would have been worth their weight in gold but … spoil the view? Rather they castrate us socially and make eunuchs of us.

Forget about Priapus and priapic and concentrate on “priapism” that means a painful, sustained, undesired and uncontrollable erection (of ugly high-rise buildings in this particular case).
