Joe Gasan Sr used to supply coal to ships – ships used to run on coal then – and went to prison for stealing coal from the Navy during World War 1.

He went to prison, but was never made to replenish the stolen coal or compensate financially, which therefore helped him to continue growing his business.

Ray Demicoli has a lot to answer for. His name is linked to one controversial project after another. Till a few years ago he seemed more interested in sailing but under this government the prospect of making more and more money must be too great.

Joe Gasan senior was jailed for racketeering on the black market in World War II, as I recall. Come 1973, and they were one of the ones who shafted their fellow shareholders in the heist of the National Bank by handing over their shares to Prime Minister Mintoff for lucrative deals – remember the Sanga shoes we all had to wear when the importation of sports shoes was banned because they made Sanga (an anagram of Gasan) in Malta. Now they are standing in line for their compensation for those National Bank shares.

But it just never is enough with this sort. They woo whoever is in government. This time they must definitely have gotten strongly behind the Labour Party prior to the election for the government to be appeasing them so much.

In reply to Antoine Vella. To ruin their children and grandchildren by leaving it to them. I have yet to meet anybody in Malta who inherited an inordinate amount and who made something of himself/herself.

I think that, at some point, accumulating wealth becomes an addiction: the thrill lies in ‘collecting’ more and more money even though they will never use it.

Men in their seventies wanting 60 million euros, for example; what possible use could they find for such a huge sum?
