I thought I read that it was empty until fuelled with gas on arrival in Malta. Therefore what are the safety concerns?

The tanks on that ship aren’t domed, more like tube sections welded to sloping flat segments as sides. One weak design prone to stress and strain concentration but obviously much cheaper. Never seen that configuration used for LNG.

If it’s true one failed, that means the vessel may lack structural rigidit with the first instance of wave motion and forces warping the tanks resulting in localised failure.

We have no idea what they did to the hull and deck to accomodate those tanks.

That thing will be moored in a bay open to the roughest sea we get in Malta and no breakwater to attenuate the risk.

This floating gas storage unit has TWO fuel-fired – that means flames – superheat steam-producing boilers for pre gasification.

Are there more surprises to come?

And up to midday today the floating storage unit is still anchored in Singapore harbour together with a fuel tanker attached to it.
