Only for that? What about the shameful way his bit on the side sidled in to progressive takes on the public purse? It’s part of his “rudeness” but in a distinct category of its own.

Not really. That statement is a symptom of the widespread misconception that practictioners of traditional professions such as law or medicine are perceived to automatically possess an overall higher intellectual and moral standard.

I guess this fallacy finds its roots decades ago when the masses could hardly read or write and only ‘professionals’ and their kin used to or have a tertiary or any formal education at all.

Today, access to education and knowledge is very different. It transcends professions or whatever degree one chooses. Nothing stops a plumber from learning about the world and its fascinating history or sciences. Likewise, a doctor is supposed to be proficient in medicine but he could be ignorant about everything else.

That some individuals who pursue arduous lines of study also tend to be intellectually gifted is a correlation rather than a direct causation.

When judging such things, we need to focus on the individual, not his or her profession or degree.

Unfortunately I suspect this fallacy remains widespread in Maltese society.
