No – what Chico is saying here (and what I have said too) is that he and I come from a generation and social background in which parents left schooling entirely up to the school and never got involved with things like homework, exams or teachers. Once a year, they would dutifully make the trek for parents’ evening (not day, because back then we didn’t get the day off school and parents didn’t take the morning off work to accommodate teachers) and that was about it. That system was a whole lot better. I did my best to stick to it myself, despite the school’s best efforts to get parents involved. I clearly remember once telling a teacher, who had rung to complain that my youngest son was running around the class distracting the other children, that when he was at school he was the school’s responsibility, not mine; that teachers should lay down the law at school and parents lay down the law at home; that there should be a clear distinction and the children should be left in no doubt at all who was in charge where.

Dottore, I recently heard about your form 2 results and find it admirable how early in life you reached the peak of your achievement.

Unfortunately I don’t know the details but I think I understood that you even surpassed Joseph Muscat who was in the same class with you. Is that so?

No, Chic. As you know, our generation never went because back then MUSEUM was strictly tar-rahal. And I never sent my sons because I wanted them to be able to think clearly – and obviously, the irrational thinking required of religious instruction is in direct conflict with the rational thinking required for every other aspect of life.

But having been raised in Hal Ghaxaq, the Law Commissioner is bound to have been sent to MUSEUM doctrine classes. So perhaps we should ask him for his achievements there.

Look, let’s just agree to disagree. You have your approach, and I had mine. I absolutely cannot stomach helicopter mothers and tend to think they are the worst thing possible for children, destroying all initiative, self-reliance and creativity.

And actually, yes – I do disagree with applauding children’s first steps and first words, because they’re not performing monkeys.

But never mind, we’ll just acknowledge that we disagree and leave it at that.

If I didn’t know better I’d have thought you’re satirising ypurself, but you lack the necessary wit and intelligence.

Why are you fixated on exam results and on that notorious school report in particular? I hear you even showed it to the then President Fenech Adami, begging him to pressure the then prime minister’s arm into appointing you minister. I understand that you were jealous that Joseph Muscat was already party leader at that point and you couldn’t bear the idea of him overtaking you.

I believe the root of your fixation with that (pathetic) form IIC report is that that was the last time you beat Joseph Muscat. And now look at you, allowing him to use you and expose you to ridicule.
