So what? The first election was the one where standards were relaxed – thrown out of the window, if you’re anything to go by. You’d never have been accepted if it wasn’t for the Sandro Schembri Adami effect. Have you thanked him yet?

We have Sandro Schembri Adami to thank for that. In 1996 he was refused as a PN candidate (unlike Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando, sadly) and went over to Labour, taking a few hundred Valletta votes with him and contributing to Alfred Sant’s 1996 victory, together with the VAT removal promises etc. We know what happened to Sandro. He was jailed.

There was too much at stake (the EU) at the next election (1998), and anyone who could get the PN a single vote, including Franco Debono, was accepted as a PN candidate. He would not have made it otherwise.
