Joe Micallef Stafrace and Guze Abela, both ministers in Mintoff’s cabinet, and Lino Spiteri in Alfred Sant’s, had no problem being heroes for a day.

Micallef Stafrace and Abela, and to a lesser extent Spiteri, left politics with their integrity intact.

Spiteri’s excuse for not quitting the corrupt Mintoff/Mifsud Bonnici cabinets was similar to the one given by Leo Brincat. He aspired to influence things from within.

A plum job in Luxembourg soon put paid to that.

The tragedy of this story is that it makes it absolutely clear (not that it wasn’t clear before) that this government, tainted as it is with the Panama Papers scandal, is a big problem for Malta.

The damage it continues, and will continue, to cause to Malta’s reputation is frightening. It will last for years to come even after this gang is voted out of office.
