In reply to Daphne Caruana Galizia. My understanding is that the FAR policy was written by the PN in Government and approved by the PL in Government . I also understand that the policy was ratified in Parliament and approved by both sides of the house. What I am saying is that if the FAR policy is adhered to then everyone should be happy.

Ah, but then you have to ask why the authorities laid down the rules in the first place. I would say it’s for roughly the same reason the authorities decided Malta needed a new power station. Wouldn’t you?

In reply to Jane. Skyscrapers are convenient money-laundering structures. Entire floors are rented out to shell companies hoarding illicit funds, with the ultra-high rental revenue then being funneled into the economy for onward investment into legitimate businesses.

Done – thanks for the alert! I think this is a very important cause and I hope all NGOs pitch in.

A couple of years ago I was flying over Palma di Mallorca, which has beautiful beaches all being marred by the high-rise buildings in every spot they could find to build on.

This year I flew over Sardinia and did not see any very significantly high towers, and business is doing very well.

While it used to be true that it is better to expand upwards rather than outwards, I doubt we need to expand at all – there are already enough properties that are vacant.

These skyscrapers will change the landscape like nothing else before it. They also pave the way for others in the same localities. Neither one of these projects was necessary: this single factor points directly towards the word ‘greed’.

It is also shortsighted greed since neither project makes financial sense. The developers should be made to go back to the drawing board.

We have to stop being armchair critics or being fatalistic and try and do something about this, otherwise we are just going to be run roughshod over.

Din L-Art Helwa are prepared to try and do something about this but we need to help them finance the costs. The money is not for them. They are all volunteers. The money is for the necessary costs such as the appeal itself.

I love the slogan. Stop the Greed – can actually be a slogan for most of the ills affecting our country today.
