“The word about town” is absolutely clear in indicating that it is gossip, talk and one would have problems understanding basic English if one were to have taken that to be fact.

Reporting indirect speech has its own merits, even if this indirect speech itself is then clearly set against that veracity scale with a range from lies through to verified fact.

Gossip lies mid-range and clarity is sometimes – but not always – supplied with additional information coming to light.
